Santa Maria Navarrese is the only village of Baunei, in the province of Nuoro: it has about 1450 inhabitants. It is located on the central east coast of Sardinia, about 150 km north of Cagliari and 160 km south of Olbia.
History
The city was built by the population of Baunei after 1950. The symbol of Santa Maria Navarrese is the small medieval church located in the center of the square, surrounded by thousand-year-old olive trees. According to legend, this church was built shortly after the year 1000 by the Princess of Navarre, who came from the Spanish region of the same name, in honor of the Virgin Mary, because she survived the shipwreck of her ship.
